Amla Powder is dried and finely powdered Indian Gooseberry. Revered in Ayurvedic tradition, it has been used for thousands of years as one of the most valued and nourishing herbs in India.

Also known as Indian Gooseberry, Amla grows on the myrobalan tree, native to India and Burma. It's traditionally valued for soothing effects on skin and for nourishing hair when used as a natural conditioner. Dried Amla, ground into a fine powder, coats and nourishes the hair and scalp, and a homemade Amla mask can add texture and volume to your hair.

Amla For Hair

Basic Amla Hair Mask

You will need: ½ cup Amla powder, ¼ cup warm water, a small bowl, a shower cap and shampoo.

  1. Scoop ½ cup of Amla powder into a small bowl and add ¼ cup of warm water.
  2. Whisk together until it forms a thin paste. If it's too thick, add water slowly to thin it out.
  3. Apply to dry hair, scooping the paste with your fingertips.
  4. Massage into your scalp and hair roots using circular motions, then work through to the ends.
  5. Pile your hair up and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 15–30 minutes.
  6. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear, then shampoo and style as usual.

Repeat this treatment every two weeks.

Amla For Hair Volume

  1. Mix Amla powder with filtered water to a lotion-like consistency.
  2. Apply to the entire head, starting at the roots and working down through the hair.
  3. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly, massaging gently.
  4. No shampoo or conditioner is needed before or after; Amla cleanses and conditions on its own.
  5. Allow hair to air dry.

Anti-Dandruff Pack

  1. Mix 2 teaspoons each of Shikakai and Amla powder in a bowl.
  2. Add some curd to form a paste.
  3. Apply to hair and leave for 15 minutes, then wash off with cold water and a mild shampoo.

Hair Fall Control

  1. Mix 2 teaspoons of Amla powder with an equal quantity of lemon juice.
  2. Apply to the scalp and leave to dry.
  3. Rinse using warm water.

Hair Conditioner

  1. Mix a little Amla powder with water and let it sit overnight.
  2. The next day, apply the paste to your hair and leave on for a few hours.
  3. Wash with a mild shampoo.

Promoting Hair Growth

  1. Make a paste with 2 teaspoons of Amla powder, curd, honey and warm water.
  2. Apply evenly on scalp and hair strands.
  3. Leave on for about 30 minutes, then rinse off completely. This pack is traditionally used to strengthen hair roots and support hair growth.

Premature Greying

Combining Amla with coconut oil is a traditional remedy for grey hair.

  1. Mix 1 cup of coconut oil with 2 tbsp Amla powder.
  2. Heat on the lowest flame until it starts to bubble slightly, continue for another minute, then turn off the heat, cover and let it steep until cooled.
  3. Strain and store in a bottle.
  4. Massage onto your scalp and leave for at least 30 minutes, or preferably overnight, then wash off.

Dull & Damaged Hair

  1. Mix two teaspoons each of Amla powder, besan, hibiscus flower powder, neem powder and tulsi powder.
  2. Add one or two tablespoons of curd to make a paste.
  3. Apply all over hair and scalp, leave for 30 minutes, then wash off with a mild shampoo.
