Did you drop your plans for a dream vacation this summer, afraid of the scorching sun? Did you hold back from taking a dip in the swimming pool, afraid of damaging your long tresses? Do you hide behind the screen in your house and miss out all the fun in the summer months? If the answer is “Yes” to any of these, then you should definitely read further.

We all agree that the summer sun seems to be becoming harsher each year and we are getting increasing warnings about the harmful effects of UV rays in the summer. The worst problems people face in this season are related to hair and skin. Extreme dryness, frizzy hair, greasy scalp, and brittle strands are few of the problems which people generally face during summer. Don’t freak out! The bountiful lap of nature holds many precious products, which when used appropriately and accurately can work wonders. Let us take a look at a variety of natural ways to protect our hair from the various problems caused due to summer sun exposure.

Ways to Replenish Lost Moisture:

Due to high temperatures and humidity in summer, the outer smooth cuticle covering of the hair breaks up and the hair absorbs moisture from the air. This leads to lackluster, dry, lifeless hair. Try these DIY hair masks to bring back the shine and life in your hair

Hair Mask #1: Make a hair mask by mixing 2 tablespoons fenugreek powder in 1 cup of curd or yogurt. Apply this on the entire scalp and hair. Rinse and wash with regular shampoo after 20-30 minutes. Use once or twice weekly. This brings back the shine to hair and replaces lost moisture.

Hair Mask #2: Mix 1 or 2 egg whites (depending on the length of your hair) with 2 to 3 teaspoons of almond oil and 2 tablespoons of curd/yogurt. Apply this on the scalp and hair and leave on for not more than 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water (egg white tends to solidify in warm or hot water) and then wash off with shampoo. This mask makes hair bouncy and has an all-day protective effect. Use this once a week for best results.

Ways to Protect from Harmful UV Rays:

Never go out without proper protection in extreme heat. UV rays damage not only the skin but also the hair. Keep your tresses safe and frizz-free with these quick-fixes before going out in the sun.

Hair Spray #1: In a spray bottle, mix 10 drops of Mesmara Lavender oil with around 2 oz of filtered water. Spray on your hair and scalp before your day out in the sun.

Hair Spray #2: Mix 10 drops of Mesmara Lemon Essential oil with around 2 oz of filtered water and spray on your beautiful tresses to keep them grease-free all day long.

Ways to Prevent Greasy Scalp:

The moisture in the air makes the hair and scalp greasy during summer. These hair packs and masks will definitely bring back the bounce in your hair and restore the shine.

Hair Mask: Tea tree oil works as a wonder hair mask. It refreshes the scalp, exfoliates, clears the pores and prevents dandruff too. Use Mesmara Tea Tree Essential oil as a hair mask by mixing 2 to 3 drops with 2 to 3 tbsp yogurt, around 8 to 10 drops of Mesmara Argan oil, few drops of honey. Massage into scalp for a good time, leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water and shampoo.

Hair Pack: Mix 5 tbsp hibiscus powder, 2 tbsp honey, and 3 tbsp of yogurt/curd to make a smooth paste. Apply on scalp and hair, allow it to rest for 30 minutes by putting on a shower cap and then wash with lukewarm water. Use twice a week for great results.

Ways to Treat Sun-Damaged Hair:

If your crowning glory is in ruins due to excessive exposure to the sun, don’t worry. There are natural therapies which can take care of the problem, without visiting expensive spas which can drill a hole in your pocket.

Deep Conditioning with Cocoa Butter: Melt Mesmara Cocoa Butter in the microwave or by using the double boiler method. Apply it thoroughly on the scalp when it is lukewarm to warm (within 20 minutes, since cocoa butter solidifies at room temperature). Wash after 20 minutes. This provides deep conditioning and nourishes back damaged hair.

Coconut Oil Champi: Heat around 10 tsp of Mesmara Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and apply on the scalp with a cotton ball when the oil is still hot (take care not to burn the scalp). Wrap a wet towel on the head and leave for 30 minutes. Wash your hair with natural shampoo.

Use Natural Shampoo: The toxins, paraben and sulfate present in chemical shampoos can further damage your sun-damaged hair. Use natural shampoos which are toxin-free, paraben-free, and sulfate-free. Mix together equal quantities of Mesmara Reetha Powder, Mesmara Shikakai Powder, and Mesmara Brahmi Powder. All 3 of these have been used since ages in Indian Ayurvedic system as hair regrowth and repair products. Make a paste of these with small quantity of water and apply on the hair. Wash after half an hour with warm water.

We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping oneself well-hydrated in summer by drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water and protecting your scalp by wearing large-brimmed hats whenever necessary; and don’t forget to flaunt those long-forgotten flashy sunglasses!!
