girl-colorful-happy-cool-51330The much awaited festival of the new year is here. Holi is a festival of colours and camaraderie. The young and the old alike, drench each other in colours, and become indistinguishable parts of one happy crowd. However, before you dress up in a white chudidar like a Yash Chopra heroine, you need to take some steps to protect your skin and hair from the harsh colors, hard water and the time spent in sun. So, here we are with tips to protect your skin and hair.

Tip #1: Apply Oil to Your Hair:

Don’t worry that by applying oil to your hair, you might end up looking like an art movie heroine instead of a Yash Chopra heroine. The moment you step out, you will be anyway drenched with colours. So, apply Coconut Oil generously to your hair. Coconut Oil will form a protective layer on your hair. Massage it well to the roots and tie up your hair to minimize the damage.

Tip #2: Coat Your Skin too With Oil:

Slather your skin with a heavy coat of Coconut or Almond Oil. These oils are absorbed by the skin quickly. They are also gentle on sensitive skin. They will also let not the colours penetrate deep into the skin. Apply oil to the entire body, and more to the exposed parts. Don’t forget the nooks and corners, like the back of the ears and neck, and the tips of your nails.

Tip #3: Don’t Forget the Sunscreen:

Since it is Holi, you can’t avoid the sun. You need to be under sun for long time. So apply a sunscreen with SPF 50+, generously on to your skin. Make sure that your sunscreen is waterproof. Otherwise, it will run down the moment you are drenched with water.

Tip #4: Wear a Top with Long Sleeves:

While you might be tempted to go out in your shorts and spaghetti straps, it is better to cover as much part of your skin with clothing as possible. Lesser the exposed area, lesser is the damage. Wear a top with long sleeves over your jeans.

Tip #5: Keep Yourself Hydrated:

Drink lots of water and fresh fruit juices during the celebrations, to keep yourself hydrated. Harsh chemicals can seep into dry skin more easily than into hydrated skin.

Post Holi:

After the celebrations are over, take a shower with warm water. Wash your hair with a shampoo and apply a hydrating conditioner. Do not scrub yourself too hard. Use a chemical free soap to wash your skin. Homemade face masks and scrubs work best for holi colours. You can make a DIY scrub at home by combining 2 Cups of Epsom salt, 1 Cup of a Carrier oil like coconut oil and a few drops an Essential oil of your choice. This scrub can work wonders on skin by replenishing its lost moisture.

The festival of colours can be best enjoyed when played in the right spirit. Encourage everyone to use herbal/organic colours. They are not only safe for the skin but also kinder on the environment. Keeping the water scarcity in mind, use minimal water while playing. Avoid accidents by applying colours safely, avoiding eyes and other sensitive areas.
