Face oils in skincare routine

In general, many skin care products contain plant oils as face oils. Essential oils can also be used on the face but that must be done with care as they are usually very photosensitive.

Which oils to use based on skin type?

Oily/acne-prone skin

People who are acne-prone tend to have lower levels of linoleic fatty acid in the skin. Oils containing linoleic acid will actually help to alleviate the condition. These oils are thinner in consistency, easily absorbed by the skin, and don’t sit on top of the skin.

  • Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil helps to disinfect the skin by clearing the bacteria from the skin pores. It should never be used straight – always use along with a carrier oil like jojoba oil.
  • Maracuja oil:This oil is obtained from the seed of passion fruit. It is not heavy and can be used for delicate under-eye skin.
  • Grape seed oil: This works well for acne and spot treatment. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Apricot seed oil: This is a non-plugging oil, rich in Vitamin E.
  • Evening primrose oil: It is antioxidant-rich, loaded with vitamins C and E. Though this is mildly comedogenic (blackhead-causing), it reduces inflammation.

Sensitive skin, which reddens easily, stings, and itches

People with sensitive skin should be very careful in choosing a face oil. Oleic acid-rich oils should be their go-to oils. They will help in healing and repairing the skin. Also, they will offer protection in harsh weather conditions.

  • Sea buckthorn oil: This should be your go-to oil in harsh weather conditions. It is antioxidant-rich with vitamins C and E. This oil is known to heal burnt skin, soothes, protects, and repairs the skin. It also reduces inflammation.
  • Chia seed oil: This oil contains 7 times the amount of vitamin C present in orange fruit. It is very useful for treating extremely dry skin.
  • Avocado oil: Avocado oil derived from the seed of an avocado fruit heals and treats dry, itchy, damaged, and sensitive skin. This oil is heavy in nature. It is also very effective in treating dry patches on the skin.
  • Coconut oil: Coconut oil has been used since ages for treating damaged skin. It can be used all of the body and hair. Be cautious to put apply it on the face if you have breakouts.

Dry skin – rough, scaly, flaking, chapped, dehydrated

The oil you use for dry skin should really seal in the moisture into your skin.

  •  Safflower oil: This heavy oil works really great for dry skin.
  • Olive oil: Though it is slightly comedogenic, it is a very rich oil. It is good to be used as a cleanser too.
  • Sunflower oil: This is very rich in vitamin E and builds a strong skin barrier. It helps protect skin from environmental damage.
  • Sweet almond oil: It helps moisturise the facial skin and also cleans out the pores. Use it heal and repair sun-damaged skin.

Mature, ageing, dry skin with fine lines and wrinkles

Use oils full of anti-ageing properties and antioxidants.

  • Rosehip oil: Studies have shown rosehip oil helps in improving elasticity. It has anti-inflammatory and skin barrier repair effects. It also improves hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and scars. You can learn more about this oil in our blog.
  • Jojoba oil: This has been shown in studies to protect the lipid barrier of the skin. It is non-comedogenic and absorbs very well into the skin.
  • Argan oil: This antioxidant-rich oil is very high in vitamin E. It increases new cell growth and increases cell turnover. Argan oil restores the lipid barrier in the skin. It is high in oleic oils. Be cautious while using on skin prone to breakouts and dermatitis.

How to use face oils

Face oils can be used under a moisturizer, with a moisturizer, or on their own. It is usually recommended to use them after applying serum and before applying a moisturizer. This helps to lock in the beneficial effects of the oil and be absorbed properly by the skin.

At night, you can skip the moisturizer and instead use only the face oil of your choice.

DIY daily anti-ageing facial massage

Start with cleansing the skin with a good cleanser. Double cleansing with first an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based one will help clear off all the makeup. Prep with a serum before applying any oil. Take 3 to 5 drops of oil on your fingertips. Massage into face and neck with gentle upward movements starting from the chin. The movements should go up and out. Do a little bit of facelift too while you are massaging. Complete the massage with circular movements. Finally, pack in the oil using a moisturizer. Don’t forget to use sunscreen on top if you are going out in the sun. You may alternatively mix the oil in your moisturizer or sunscreen to make it easy to use.
