5 DIY Home Remedies For Winter Maladies

When the weather is cold, sicknesses seem to have a ball. You are often buried under sheets of blankets fighting that common cold, cough, congestion etc. Skin problems are also aplenty – cold sores, chapped lips, cracked feet to name a few. While is it important to show to a doctor if your problems are severe, some of these problems can be sorted with simple home remedies. Let’s see how you can get rid of your winter woes by using the ingredients available in your kitchen.

#1 – Congestion:

Congestion of nose and chest is a very common ailment during the cold winter days. This is because of the air around us is drier during winters, so the mucus lining on the walls of our nose thickens. This leads to the stuffiness of nose and congestion in the throat and chest. This ailment is more common in children. A vapour rub is a household solution for mild congestions. Here’s a recipe for child-safe vapour rub.

Ingredients:

You can prepare a vapor rub at home using very few basic ingredients.

  1. 3-4 tbsp Mesmara Virgin Coconut Oil or Mesmara Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Almond Oil
  2. 2 tbsp Beeswax
  3. 4-5 drops of Mesmara Eucalyptus Essential Oil ( For adults this can be increased to 15-20 drops)
  4. 4-5 drops of Fir Essential Oil ( For adults use 15-20 drops of Mesmara Peppermint Essential Oil)
  5. Optional – For adults – 10 drops of Mesmara Rosemary Essential Oil

Method:

Lightly heat beeswax and the oil together in double boiler method. Let it cool. Add the essential oils and mix well. Store in a jar for use.

This homemade vapor rub is a great way to keep congestions at bay.

#2 – Cold:

Cold is another common ailment during winters. Influenza virus spreads rapidly in dry weather. Hence the common cold is more common during the winters. A great home remedy for common cold is Lemon Ginger Tea.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 Large Lemon Sliced into roundels
  2. 3-4 1 inch Ginger pieces
  3. 1 teaspoon Honey
  4. 1 glass Water

Method:

Boil 1 glass water. Remove it from the heat and add the lemon slices and ginger pieces. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Filter the water into a glass. Add a teaspoon of honey. Drinking this lemon and ginger infused warm water has a calming effect on our throat and respiratory system. It also boosts our immune system, helps in moistening the dry throat and breaks up the accumulation of cold.

#3 – Cold Sores:

Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus, also known as HSV-1. They are often formed over the lips and mouth area. Cold sores can last for a week and usually go away on their own. There is no known cure for this but some applications can help reduce the pain and stop them from spreading. One such application is a balm.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 teaspoon Petroleum jelly
  2. 5-10 drops Lemon Balm Extract

Method:

This is the simplest way to prepare a lip balm which is effective on cold sores. Lemon Balm has antiviral properties which render it very effective in soothing the cold sores. Transfer a teaspoon of petroleum jelly into a lip balm jar. Pour 5-10 drops of Lemon Balm Extract into the jelly and mix well. Dab a cotton bud into the balm and apply on the affected area.

#4 – Cough:

Dry cough is a very bothersome problem during the winters. Like cold, it is also caused due to the drying up of the internal mucous lining of our respiratory tract. While there are a number of home remedies for a dry cough, what works best is a homemade syrup of ginger powder.

Ingredients:

  1. 2 teaspoons ACV (Mesmara Apple Cider Vinegar)
  2. 2 teaspoons Water
  3. 1 teaspoon Honey
  4. 1 teaspoon Ginger Powder

Method:

Mix all the liquids together and then add ginger powder. Mix well. You can increase the quantities proportionately to fill a syrup bottle. Drink one spoon a time three times a day. Honey and ginger boost the immune system, thus helping in fighting the dry cough.

#5 – Cracked Heels:

Cracked heels can be very painful. The longer you ignore them, the larger the cracks would become. Some might even bleed. Cracked heels are all the more dangerous for diabetics as their wounds take longer to heal. It is very important to treat cracked heels promptly. A very simple yet effective remedy for cracked heels is this foot cream.

Ingredients:

  1. 2 tbsp Mesmara Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  2. 2 tbsp Mesmara Shea Butter
  3. 1 tbsp Almond Oil
  4. 5-7 Drops of Mesmara Peppermint Essential Oil

Method:

Put Shea butter, Coconut oil and Almond Oil in a glass bowl. Heat in a double boiler until they melt completely. Let the mixture cool down fully. Then add 5-7 drops of Peppermint EO. Transfer the contents to the fridge for 15-20 mins. Bring out and whisk the solidified mixture. Transfer to usable tins. Apply the cream daily to the heels. Peppermint EO has antibacterial and muscle relaxant properties. Shea butter is a very soothing skin moisturizer. All combined, this cream works wonders for cracked heels.

These home remedies will help you keep safe during the winters. However, it is also important to maintain a healthy diet, take seasonal fruits and drink a good amount of water every day. And if a cough, cold or congestion persist for more than a week, then you should visit a doctor.
