5 DIY Face Packs for Oily Skin

Many of us are troubled with oily skin. No matter how hard  we try to keep our faces clean, the skin becomes sticky within few hours again. Today, let’s get under the skin to understand what is oily skin. All of us have what are known as sebaceous glands. They are right under the skin and just about above the hair roots. They are responsible to secrete an oily or waxy substance which essentially waterproofs us and helps in locking in the moisture of the skin. This oil is called Sebum and plays an important role in keeping our skin healthy and young.  When there is excess secretion of sebum from sebaceous glands, we feel the oiliness. While some of us inherit oily skin genetically from our parents, for some it might get accentuated during their puberty and usually by adulthood the skin is back to normal. A few can get it due to medicinal side effects or due to the incorrect usage of beauty care products. The nature of our skin also depends on the seasons and summers are when our skin is bound to secrete more oil.

Oiliness is not just the uncomfortable feeling, it also leads to acne, pimples and larger pores – which in turn lead to blackheads and also complications with makeup wearing off sooner than expected. The brighter side is that it can be controlled. There are many off the shelf products, some of which are chemically created, while some are natural products and then there are home remedies. It purely depends what works for you and what you believe in.

We touch upon five of our time-tested recommendations to manage oily skin.

#1 – Orange Peel

Orange peel powder is an amazing ingredient. It can be used with many different ingredients to prepare a variety of face packs.

Use 2 tablespoon of Mesmara orange peel powder to create a paste with a few drops of lime and some sandalwood powder. This paste is very helpful in managing the oiliness and it also removes the blackheads that are caused by it. If you have acne, the sandalwood present in the pack soothes it and also reduces the inflammation.

Another variation to the pack is to mix it with 2 tablespoon of yogurt. This skin face pack helps in controlling the secretion by reducing the size of open pores.  The lactic acid helps in the removal of dead cells and impurities from the skin. The acidity in the yogurt lightens age spots and even corrects uneven skin tone or dark patches on the skin.

#2 – Multani Mitti / Fullers Earth

Multani mitti is a standard ingredient used in face packs for oily skin. Add 2 teaspoon of Rose water and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to to 1 tablespoon of Mesmara multani mitti and turn it into a paste.  This paste soaks up the oiliness not just on the skin surface but its deep penetrating and high absorbing nature reduces a lot of the oiliness under the skin too. It is an excellent cleansing agent that leaves the skin feeling soft and radiant.

You could also mix it with 2 tablespoon of tomato juice, 1 teaspoon of sandalwood and turmeric powder and create a face mask that also lightens the skin tone and makes it look fresh and bright.

#3 – Potato and Lemon Juice Pack

Potato skin is full of potassium, calcium and vitamin A and C, all of which are extremely important for the skin.  Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. The acidity of the lemon helps in reducing excessive oiliness.  Lime is also a natural skin lightening agent that helps in removing skin tan. Both work towards reducing the age indicators such as wrinkles, fine lines and age spots. Mix potato juice and lemon juice in equal parts and apply it evenly on the face. Let the mixture dry on your face, and then wash it off with plain water.

#4 – Sandalwood and Neem Face Pack

A neem face pack calms down the skin and makes it clear by reducing any bacterial infection. It can also treat signs of aging by working on reducing wrinkles, dryness, and thinning of the skin. Neem is truly a magical herb and is the answer to many of the skin issues.

Take a teaspoon of Mesmara neem powder and mix it with a teaspoon of sandalwood powder. Make a paste using 1 tablespoon of rose water or plain water. Apply this mixture on the face evenly and wait for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with plain water and then pat dry. This face pack is ideal for teenagers who have acne and pimples on the face.

#5 – Cucumber Face Mask

In addition to having it in the salad, placing raw cucumber on your skin directly or mixing it with other ingredients can yield some excellent results. The ascorbic acid and caffeic acid present in cucumber help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling and give a refreshing feeling to your oily skin. Cucumber also works by reducing the inflammation caused by pimples.

Just cutting a few slices and putting them on your skin can do wonders. To make a face mask, grate a cucumber and separate the juice from the pulp and then refrigerate the juice and the pulp. When needed, dip the chilled pulp in the juice and apply it to the spots on your face, one at a time. Dip the pulp in the cold juice again if it starts to get warm. You can also add two spoons of curd to the pulp. Apply the mixture to your face and wash it off after 25-30 minutes.

These natural face packs for oily skin can help in treating skin problems and give you healthy and glowing skin without any side effects.
